The family of John Millar, Civil Engineer (C.E.) and architect, lived in Ulsterville, Belfast, Ireland. His grandfather, John Millar was a stone and marble mason, and his father was Colonel John Millar in the British Army.

Young John Millar was credited with designing many Presbyterian churches in a neo-Greek style and also many town works in Belfast.
